Inspired by elaborate cultural and
artistic details, bustling environments and rich sensory
experiences, Mel Lim brings her joyfully expressive concepts
to many creative disciplines. This multifaceted Malaysian
Chinese designer, received her early design education
from the prestigious London Institute, Central St. Martins,
and graduated with the highest distinction in Bachelors
of Science in Industrial Design from Art Center College
of Design in Pasadena, California.
Her design career in America has led her to some of the
most distinguished architecture and design firms, including
Ellerbe Becket, Sussman/Prejza, Hunt Design Associates
and Kiku Obata & Company. Mel Lim has served in key
roles on many award-winning projects covering the spectrum
of different building types: commercial retail, stadiums,
specialty retail and mixed-use development. From children’s
book and packaging design, to international retail projects,
Mel Lim’s wide range of design work has been recognized
with a number of awards including the AIA/LA, PRINT and
American Graphic Design Awards.
Mel Lim started her eponymous line JOY in 2005, with
merely 15 greeting cards and in less than 3 years, her
products have been featured in over 100 lifestyle fashion
and design magazines, blogs and she has been hailed the
next California Stylemaker. Today the line has become
a lifestyle brand, covering paper + patterns to home +
fashion accessories.
Mel also designs private labels for brands who seek her
unique sense of colors, patterns and concepts. She also
works with businesses and architects who find her background
in industrial design an asset in delivering successful
solutions to multidisciplinary projects; combining business
with design, 2D with 3D and simply joy with originality. |
